Is there anyone who would be interested working with LCDInfo if it was made open source ?
I'm not planning to abandon the program but as many could have seen I haven't had as much time for it lately as I would have liked. So in case there are people who would be interested in extending and developing it further with me then making it open source could be useful.

Of course there is already the possibility to make plugins and some have already taken advantage of that but having access to the source code of the main program would allow much more than just the plugin SDK.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Also making LCDInfo work in Linux is not out of the question, in fact it has been in my plans.

Most definitely. You are obviously very busy and this would really help it's development. This is a great little program and if it worked with Girder (my main area of interest) I think it would open the door to A LOT more usage.

I would be very interested in assisting with development.

Hi Henri,
Yes, I am very interested in working with LCDInfo. I work as an embedded
software engineer and use ANSI C. But time is changing, embedded
software uses more and more C++ and design tools with UML.
So I am searching for a private project to improve my C++ skills.
At the moment I am building a home theater pc with a noritake 800a 128x32
vfd and I search for a software to display all the infos I like to.
I just tested successfully the vfdani.exe but not yet LCDInfo, but I think both use
the same driver.
It looks like there is only support for the 128x64 noritake 800a. So in a
first step I am interested in adding support for other resolutions to the
noritake driver and perhaps to some other drivers.

Regards,

Joerg Linsenmayer

I'm glad to hear of your interest.

I think I need to do some preparation for the project sources before releasing them but I'll start the work on that next.

I also just setup a new subforum for discussion about LCDInfo development specific issues.

i think tehre will be some problems, because un-privileged users also will want to use LCDinfo, but as i remember, th problem is about giving access to lpt port...

but idea is grate :), lcdinfo + lm_sensers + other coolt linux stuff will do more than windows

I just bought two Noritake VFDs off of ebay, I plan on getting into LCD/VFD software development. I can't say I'd make it a number one priority in my life, but I would definitely be willing to share what I learn with the rest of the community. Sourceforge.net would host the project for free. No need to worry about bandwidth limits or anything if they host the files for you.

Cool, sounds great, i remember posting a thread requesting the source to LCD info a while back. :D.

Ofcourse, there would probably need to be a team of maintainers...or something. just so that there is somewhere to post contributions.

Henri, you should nominate some sort of updater - or will you be happy to accept code changes and additions if we posted them to you (or via CVS)?

Also, a linux lcdinfo would be great for my server.

If LCDInfo were released as source (under GPL i suppose...) then i'm sure there would be more development, and it's understandable that henri doesnt have much time for development.

Reuben.

Count me in as well
I'm trying to develop something (in VB6) that can accept input from the parallel port as well as a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platnum Remote Control.
:P

If as Root, you can run LCDInfo as a service, you can get around the problem of restricting userland access to the lpt. Every 10 seconds or so, have the service check for changes to to the config files. It might not be perfect, but it should work.

Hey, Im also an embedded software developer, and HTPC and these sorts of things have long been an interest of mine. It would be great to see this go open source so that LCDinfo can becomre the premier LCD software available...

Whats the status of the move to open source at this moment, is it still in the pipeline Henri?

This isn't very well prepared move to open source but it's better than nothing I think.
