Can someone tell me how to connect the Noritake T23A via serial. I've only been able to find parallel connection info. |

It just needs a level converter with MAX232 or some equivalent function IC. The serial input pin is pin 11 in the IDC data connector or then the middle pin in the 3 pin power connector. You can use either one of these. Here is an example using MAX232: http://chaokhun.kmitl.ac.th/~kswichit/MAX232/MAX232.htm So you just connect the signal coming from the PC serial port TXD pin through the level converter to the VFD serial input pin. |

Thanks Henri. Is there a benefit to serial. Lower CPU usage? High compatability? Easier to program? |

I don't know if there's that much benefit using serial. Parallel should be faster but with a character display like this speed should't be a problem. Someone might like to connect it to serial port and someone to parallel. Then there's of course the issue that some PC's don't have parallel port. Anyway if you have a display wired with either way and it's working I don't see reason to change. Also if you're just planning to wire the display it's up to you to decide which method to use. There shouldn't be any difference in functionality. |
