I have just done some testing with the display and played with the settings. Something very strange is that the display seems very unstable now and I don't know yet why. When I did the testing last time everything worked perfectly with the test program and LCDInfo driver but now there seems to be problems even if I have not touched the wiring or code. I'll work on that...

But here is now an updated test that has some options to play with. It's a command line utility and you can give it parameters from the command line. When you run it some help is printed.

Thanks for correcting me, Telek. :) As I said I wasn't 100% sure, and when I did a quick search the only spec I came up with said 100mA. :) Glad someone knew the real specs. :)

Henri, do you have the exact same module that ignatz has? Is it possible that the configuration of the bias is reversed in his module, so that the setting that worked on yours, makes his blank? Anyway, just trying to cover all of the options.

I'm still worried by the fact that the backlight is getting enough current to illuminate... As Telek said, it shouldn't, the LPT port shouldn't be able to supply nearly enough current to even get the backlight to glow in the dark. But, if you are sure (which you have said) that the wiring is correct, then I guess it just must be my own paranoia. ;)

I can remember my CrystalFontz KS0108 128x64 also lit up faintly, even though supply voltage was off, but LPT was connected.

Cool... Like I said then... just my paranoia. ;)

Maybe the LPT port delevers more current than I think.

Yes it should be as I got mine from him. :D
But I did notice some strange things with this display including the bias setting when I tested again yesterday so I need to do more testing to see what is really going on. Also that latest test allows adjusting the bias setting too.

Yes I think it can deliver enought current for this as I saw the same phenomenon with my piece of the display and some other displays too.

Have you tried a second display? Maybe the one you have is faulty. :( I would hate to think it was that though...

I did some testing again few days ago and this time the display was again working very stable and consistently with the test program using the 1/6 bias option and contrast set to about 15.

ignatz:
Do you see any reaction at all in the display when running the program ? Or does it just stay same as when powered off ?

Ignatz,

If you are going to send me one... Send me the one you have connected, keep the unwired one for yourself. This would give me a better Idea of working out what has gone wrong. ;)
