Also been working on a VFD USB board:

Noritake GU128x64-800:

Noritake GU256x64-355:

As you can see it's not exact fit to the locking connector in the -355 as it was not designed with that display model in mind. But it works.
Board works with GU256x64-372 too and has no fitting problems as it uses same kind connector as the GU128x64-800. Works with some others from the -3xx series also but I haven't tested myself as I don't have the displays.

Board for the Noritake 3900 series VFD displays also available now. Currently supported sizes are 256x128 and 256x64 pixels but other sizes can be added if needed.

Maybe Henri can shed some light on that one, if it also speeds up the bugger then it'd be sweet.

I was waiting for you Trev  Yes GPO for future toys :P

Hadn't yet thought about the 128x32-311 but could be possible also. There will be additional costs and work if doing a custom board for that display model so that might not be the first option unless there is quite a lot of demand to justify the costs. Of course if money is not an issue anything is possible ;)
But using this board with custom wiring between the board and display and custom firmware would be cheaper to make in small quantity. So if there is demand we can discuss about that.

Yes the expansion header in the board can be used for GPIO so something could be controlled with it or maybe buttons added. Also hardware PWM for few outputs is possible. And there are couple pins connected to the AD converter so analog input is also possibility.

Nah it's ok i can find some colored plexi here too. I was wondering if it smoothens the white areas better than without? You know how large white areas look like on this 3900.

Hi Henri,

Sorry to dig up such an old post, but I just discovered one of these gems in a parts box.

I'm wondering if you've worked on your USB backpack any more, and if you ever produced a kit?

I still have some of the Noritake USB board PCB's around so it should be possible to assemble a board if someone would like to have one.

You still have these available? I have an old EMAX POS display which uses the 256x64 VFD - would be cool to actually use it. Contact is good through e-mail at wyletype@yahoo.com
