Support for Noritak CU20049SCPB-W2A serial?

Post subject:  Support for Noritak CU20049SCPB-W2A serial?
I'm looking for a VFD display, and so far the only one that meets my needs is the Noritake using a serial interface.

Is this display supported by LCDInfo?

If not, does anybody know of a large (minimum character height: 7mm) 4x20 VFD with serial interface that is supported?

I checked the CU20049SCPB-W2A datasheet and seems to be that it's parallel only display ? Did you mean some other model ?

CU20045SCPB-T23A model has serial support and is also supported by LCDInfo.

When Noritake says 'serial support' they often mean that's optional (like the T23A); you need a serial backpack with that. Parallel should be no problem.

Sorry, it's actually the "starter kit" KCU20049SCPB-W2A-CA that I'm interested in - it's the same display with some sort of serial "backpack".

Unfortunately parallel is not an option as it's going in a Via Epia MS10000 that has no parallel port! Besides, the processor is not very fast, so I would like to take as much load off the processor as possible, which I understand the serial interface-displays do?

With T23A I wouldn't call serial exactly optional as it includes serial functionality too and it only requires the level converter like MAX232 for example. Then strict parallel Noritake displays like W2A require the additional backpack to work with serial interface.

I'm not familiar with the Noritake backpack from the starter kit so there isn't driver for it so could be that it doesn't work with LCDInfo currently. Or maybe it is compatible with some other driver already included. I need to have a better look into that.

Do you have a datasheet link to the KCU20049SCPB-W2A-CA package that I could check ?

Just quickly looking at the datasheet I think that is some Noritake specific protocol used in the serial module so I don't think there is LCDInfo driver for it yet.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'll leave it then - it's way too expensive anyway :wink:

I think I may go for the graphic VFD GU140x32F-7000 instead http://www.noritake-itron.com/Specs/GU7 ... 000-02.pdf. It only costs about half of the other one, and I think it may be partly supported by LCDC :? Otherwise I may just take a shot at developing something myself...

Would it be possible to access and control the display with something like MS Visual C++ .NET or MS Visual Basic .NET or would I need something "bigger" (more expensive)? This may be a stupid question, but my only programming experience is with Visual basic for applications, and I never had to interface to external units.

The Noritake 7000 is supported by LCDHype, only in parallel mode though.

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have a parallel port, so that's a no go :( I just ordered the display, so I guess I'll have to see if I can make something myself...
