I need a datasheet or pinout for this beast , any help most appreciated.

The closest I could find was this: http://www.futaba.com/products/display_modules/module_products/pdfs/M202MD12BA-BJ.pdf

A serial 20x2 display, with 5V: The Pinout seemes to be:

1:RXD, 2:RTS, 3:TXD, 4:CTS, 5:reset, 6:5V, 7:Ground

Not sure what controller the board has. Try other possible VFD, e.g. Norritake
