the scheme you used is rubbish. the display there is a sed-1330 display, but the pinout is a typical t6963c pinout - so these two don't fit together.

the other scheme is ok for you. btw. you are a lucky man because your display outputs the negative voltage on pin 9 needed for contrast adjustment (pin 4).
a variable resistor between pin 9 and pin 4 should be quite fine, you will not need one of those circuits found in the scheme for producing the negative voltage ..
