Hi all, I have enought problems soldering standard size PDIP's and components let alone SMD devices so my questions is, how do you experiment with large SMD chips? Ideally, I'd like to be able to rig up prototypes on a breadboard using IC's like the SED1335 or SED1375 but I have no way of testing them or putting them into a final board. I've looked around and found heaps of adapters on the net but they are all *extremely* expensive and most of them don't help with the use of breadboards.

The sort of packages I'm talking about here are QFP14 (an 80 pin SMD package that the SED1375 uses) and TQFP100 (a 100 pin SMD packaged used by almost all types of dual port SRAM). If anyone could give me any suggestions on how to go about this I would be most greatfull.

Thanks in advance,

HumanBean

There's no easy way to experiment with SMD other than to etch your own PCB's i guess.
Some people use their oven, others just blotch all pins with solder then use solder wick to suck it away.

If you are comfortable with design, you could pick up a free copy of EagleCad, make your own adapters, and then head over to http://www.sparkfun.com to get the boards made. They allow as little number of boards as you want and are fairly cheap. It does take some time to get boards back, but it is great quality.
