I don't remember, that the LPT has so many controlpins. I preffer RS232 ;-)

The D/I Pin is equal to the R/S signal on HD44780, and all signals are high active on this device.

Well...the serial port is easier to manage from the software "side" but you always need an extra circuit to drive a device through it.
With the parallel port you can drive a LCD directly.
It's a matter of tastes I think

The parallel port gives you 12 pins to drive a LCD display: 8 for data lines, 4 for control pins.

DB0-DB7 ---> parallel port data lines (2 to 9 of the parallel port)
CS1,CS2 ---> pin 1,14 of the parallel port
EN ---> pin 16 of the parallel port
R/W ---> to GND (you can only send data but not read from the display)
D/I ---> pin 17 of the parallel port

Reset ---> can be driven individually by a button

Remarks: pin 1,14,17 are active low, pin 16 is active high.

The pin D/I actually I don't know what is its function but if it's a control pin for the display can be driven by the parallel port.

Bob
