Hello,this is my first post... I've got a compatible (i think...) 4x20 hd44780 display.... WHen i connect only power lines,i ve got this 
When i run whatever program,display show only first and second line....like this 
I've wired like smartie's scheme... Is my display broken????thanks! |

Yes,sir.... I've tried almost all display programs,....same thing!!!!! |
