Hi!

I have a motorola RAZR which I don't need anymore. I was wondering whether I could use the LCD screen in it as a graphic LCD for my PC.

Is it possible?
Thanks in advance!

Hello!

Yes, it's possible. After all, it did work, so what you say is not beyond
the technology.
But you don't say much about how you want to use it, what for (display
text? Display videos). You don't tell us if you have docs or not. There is
absolutely no standard in this world. Each LCD has its own connector
with its own pin assignment. Beside this, how will you wire it to your PC.
USB? RS232? Parallel?

One advice: it you don't want to loose too much time, don't use this
LCD, use an LCD that you have a full documentation and possibly sample
code. Even with the docs, it can already be tricky if you are not used to
program LCD drivers.

Have fun!

Thanks very much olly!

I'm so new to this I haven't even considered everything you have just said.

There's so much into it that you have to consider. Actually, I need it to display information (text, visuals - including images).

I'm working on a PC control platform, so I thought a small screen would be useful, displaying simple info, like system stats, Winamp info, and maybe startup and shutdown splash screen, you know.

On a seconf thought, I believe using a VFD is a better choice because it's very bright, clear, and can be seen from quite far.

Maybe you can point me to some useful links that can help me? Thanks!

Hello!

If you need to display stats, there are some nice graphic VFDs, yes.
But to answer your question, sorry, but I have no pointers for VFD.

If it's for a professional product that you plan to sell thousands, you have
to find a very cheap display, maybe a VFD as you said (I don't know if it
will be cheap, I design only very low power consumption devices, so no
VFD for me).

Now if it's a hobby project and if you can accept paying a bit more
for your hobbies, there are some very nice color LCDs coming from
the telephone and game worlds.

It's a hobby project. I do like the LCD screens but I find the VFDs more appealing. I have found some resources on VFDs here, perhaps you'll be interested:
