I have found a datasheet for this LCD but I need to know what the commands are for driving it! Any ideas? Is it some 'standard' Sharp protocol. Anything would be helpful. Thanks all 
As I have quite a few of these I have pulled one apart. Here is some more information (In no order): It is LED backlit. 20 pin connector sub board is marked X1657CP Main CPU? made by Sharp LZ96645 Sub semiconductors LMC85 and ADM660 |

If you found the datasheet, maybe you could post it or a link to it so we could also check it and see what it says. Could probably give some more advice then. |

This looks like a controllerless 8-bit input STN display. So it needs to be constantly refreshed. As it's controllerless there aren't any commands but instead you just feed it the data following the timing diagrams in the datasheet. |

Sorry for delay - Does that mean that the data is just displayed line by line? That would also explain a few things. The display comes off a hand held PC device running DOS, so I suppose it would be logical for it to display as a line by line device rather than the usual LCD driver as it would display information quicker. I will have to look further. Annoyingly I have over 100 of them! |

Yes, the data clocked in through the data lines gets shows on the display line by line. And the whole display data needs to be rewritten maybe 70 times each second. |
