						 Yes you can use that. 10 Kohm potentiometer should work and no other parts are needed. Connect one end of the potentiometer to -12v and other end to GND. Middle pin will then be the variable output.
 
 I don't know for others but the reason I'm using inverter circuits is that I don't feel comfortable modifying the ATX power connector for this purpose. There's nothing wrong doing it that way but it's just not the way I do it. I also like the fact that I can power the display using just one +5v line.
 
 Also some of my displays have internal negative voltage converter and pot, some have negative voltage but need external pot and some don't have any negative voltage generator at all.
