Post subject:  problem with winstar wh2004a

I have some problems connecting this, i've used http://www.myrolypoly.com/lcd_project/lcd_project_pics/lcd-db25.gif to wire up the display, except i've used a 50k instead of the 10k which is what the guide that followed my lcd said i should. I've got the background-light working, and i've checked all the connections atleast 3 times, but i still doesn't see the two vertical blocks. The VLc gets 5v vhen the pot is turned as much down as possible. Anyone has any suggestions to what i might have done wrong? Is there a way to "cheat" the LCD into showing the two bars without having it connected to the computer, eg by going high on E?(haven't tried this tough).

Thanks,

Peter

Update: i seem to have posted in the wrong forum, sorry about that. If a moderator sees this, please move to the right forum.

With HD44780 only thing needed to get the test bars should be a working contrast and power connected to VCC and GND. You don't need anything connected to the data and control lines.

I tried placing a 10k instead of the 50k, and now the display works perfect! i'm so happy :p
