I recently bought a graphic lcd off ebay and have been having trouble getting it to display anything. I do not have a datasheet, but I was told the pinout was as follows:

Pin out of LCD module
Pin # Name Description
01 D7 Data 7
02 D6 Data 6
03 D5 Data 5
04 D4 Data 4
05 D3 Data 3
06 D2 Data 2
07 D1 Data 1
08 D0 Data 0
09 C/-D Command and Data, low Data, high Command
10 -WR Low Write to LCD
11 -RD Low Read from LCD
12 -CE Low LCD Module Enable
13 -RESET Low Reset LCD Module
14 +5 Power
15 Gnd Ground
16 BotLEDGnd Ground Sink to turn back light LED on
17 CenLEDGnd Ground Sink to turn back light LED on
18 TopLEDGnd Ground Sink to turn back light LED on

I have it connected to a DB25 as follows:

LCD Pin / LPT Pin
1 - 9
2 - 8
3 - 7
4 - 6
5 - 5
6 - 4
7 - 3
8 - 2
9 - 17
10 - 16
11 - 14
12 - 1
13 - reset, im not sure what to connect here, more on that below.
14 - 5v
15/16/17/18 - GND

When i turn the display on i get an all black background so the display works, its just that I cannot get any program to display any text to it. I was curious if maybe it was the reset as i left that disconnected. Now, should this go to GND or should it go to the 5V? When i connected it to ground the displays black background clears, when its connected to 5v nothing happens, the black background stays. Anybody have any advice/help?

Im not sure, but dont they need a contrast control? usually connected to a -12v? so it could be displaying, but with no contrast, you just cant see it.

That pinout looks familiar. Are you sure the display size is not 256x40 ?

It might be the display from the Toshiba InTouch module. I have a thread from www.hardforum.com saved at home where this display is discussed. Also Zotty as a guest star there ;)

Does the display look like the one in the 256x40 section here ?

You need to connect the reset to +5v unless there is a pullup already. But even if there is connecting it to +5v won't hurt.

Sorry for the late reply fellas.

Yeah, they could be twins :P The guy i bought it from said 240x48, either way its close enough for me.

I emailed the guy I bought it from and he finally got back to me saying what Henri said, that it needs to be connected to the 5v line. Should I use a small switch like a lot of lcds use or is it ok if i just hook it straight to the 5v and ignore the switch?

As for the contrast, everything is built in, even a tiny pot on the back, so theres no contrast connection (unless you want to get picky and say the built in pot :P).

Ill try and remember where I posted next time and let you guys know how it goes (or doesnt) ;)

Oh yeah, when I hooked it up the first time with no connection to the reset, I noticed the LEDs and the pot getting pretty hot to the touch. Is that normal for this LCD? I made sure to check the voltages to the LEDs and my power connections and all were the expected 5v. I was going to change the LED color but YEOW, wasnt expecting it the first time i grabbed them.

I don't think the potentiometer should get hot to the touch. LEDs can get quite warm sometimes though.

It's ok to just permanently hook the reset to +5v. At least I've done that with several displays.

Then the discussion I mentioned earlier:
http://www.skippari.net/lcd/forumstuff/[H]ardForum%20-%20T6963c%20240x64%20graphic%20LCD--%20Help!.htm
I don't exactly remember what was there but I remember that the end result was that ltickett got his display working (the 256x40 one you can see in the gallery section).

Meh, finally had some time to play around with this thing and it still wont display anything.

I read the HardOCP post and realized the pinout he traced was one different than the one I was given, which was the wr and rd pins were flipped. Ive hooked it up according to the schematic on this site yet my LCD still will not display anything. Ive checked and double checked the wiring so im pretty boggled right now.

Heres how i have it connected now:
Code:
LCD         DB25
01  D7         9
02  d6         8
03  d5         7
04  d4         6
05  d3         5
06  d2         4
07  d1         3
08  d0         2
09  cd         16
10  rd         17
11  wr         1
12  ce         14
13  reset
14  5v
15  gnd
16  ledgnd
17  ledgnd
18  ledgnd

Reset to +5v, LCD #15-18 to gnd, DB25 18-25 to gnd.

I was even a good boy and checked my wiring from the db25 and found a loose connection, but all work now, i can even place an LED in and watch it throb as the clock that the LCD should be displaying ticks away :\

All I can see on screen is a fully black screen when my constrast is all the way up, i would even be happy with some scrambled junk at this point. It doesnt even have any initilization lines.

Any ideas?

Ah ha, found the culprit!

I had winamp playing while i wired it up, which had LiquidMP3 installed and running, so when i powered it on, you can guess :P

Stupid me, figured it out.

Thanks Henri!

Hey man, I just ordered the same screen, most likely from the same person on ebay... I was wondering how does it look like up close? Any chance you could post some pics of it in action please?
Also why do you need to connect LPT pins 18-25 to the ground anyway

Theres a link in the thread to the LCDInfo gallery which has the display running. I would post a pic, but alas, i dont have a camera (digital anyway). So that should at least give you a general idea.

As for the ground, i dunno, every schematic ive ever seen has done it, so i figured thats how it is, no questions :P

Oh, got it. But that one is a 240x64.
The one you got displays stuff about the same, only a bit shorter in height? that's all?

No, its the same display. The guy on ebay selling them has them listed wrong I believe, as the pinout he has listed has a mistake as well if you trace the leads on the chip.
