Hi,

I'd like to try connecting my Nokia 5110 LCD with my parallel port, but I lack an schematic to do so. Can anybody help me with a link/image?

I know people have used 5110 lcds with LCDInfo using this schematic:

Only difference with 5110 display should be the Osc pin which was mentioned here:

The 9 pin pinout for 5110 display should be this:

Henri, thanks for the reply. However, I still have some doubts (I'm sorry, but I want to fully understand this). Osc pin from the LCD must (or so I think) be connected to a PCD8544, however, no 8544 is present in the schematic:

or this schematic (very similar, but instead of using an embedded chip to convert logic voltages, uses R's and Zener diodes):

I may be doing a wrong assumption, which is that the right side pins on your schematic are not connected directly to the LCD, but to PCD8544, and then there would be several connections between PCD8544 and LCD (as stated in the PCD8544 .pdf sheet). I was making this assumption after reading a french tutorial about making 3310's screen work with LCDINFO without using PCD8544.

According to this article, it is possible to do it without PCD8544. I was wondering what would happen if LCDinfo could use one of the LPT port pins to output a 32Khz clock signal... could 5510's LCD be used as in the french guide?

Again, I thank on advance any tips or guidance that anybody can give.

No problem, better ask if something is not understood.

There's no separate PCD8544 controller but rather the chip is on the lcd glass. It's the dark rectangular chip next to the connector.
The signal names in the schematic are meant to be directly connected to the corresponding display pins.

So it's not possible without PCD8544 as that's the controller LCDInfo interfaces with and also PCD8544 is integrated in the display.

You should not need to feed 32Khz signal to the Osc pin as according to the PCD8544 datasheet connecting the Osc pin to Vdd (V+ in the schematic) enables the onchip oscillator.

Hope this clears some things.

Basically that is very similar to the way presented here in this forum. It is just using only resistors on the data lines and no level converting IC. There seem to be some differences in the order the signals are connected to LPT port but if they are changed to match the schematic presented here it should work fine with LCDInfo. It is also using external power but that shouldn't matter.

using 2.8v zener on pin 7.

1K resistors on lcd pins 2,3,4,5 and 9

I have managed to get a screen from a nokia 5110 but I can't get it working...

Kalamake ar you using only one zener? On the image there seems to be 6 zeners used. And have you used capacitors?

And...what is the best way to connect the wires to the lcd? I used the original plate from the phone but since I messed a bit to much, the connections may not work anymore... I thought about soldering the wires directly to the lcd but the connector seems to be made of rubber so that's no sollution...

Hey All, for those who are interested ive written a program (only beta-1) to display a string of text onto one of these displays using SerDispLib.
enjoy.
It's a simple program which is run from the linux command line.
Ps: I will be updating it very soon.

I did testi, one zener, no other components!!!
zener between lpt pins 7 and 25
pin 7 on lpt to pin1 on lcd


Maybe display might get broken, but if shit happens, buy new display and put resistors.

Hi, I would like to test the display I have.

I was trying to control the display with a microprocessor but as I got no results yet I may have burned the display controller.

Can anyone send me a program that already controls the display through Computer Parallel port or a piece of code? This way I can asure of it´s condition.

This should work (opens only a console window without displaying anything in it, and quits with esc) displaying a tiny effect on the screen.

How to wire the LCD to LPT port:

1 - SDA
2 - CD
3 - Reset
14 - SCL


If your LPT port is older 5 volts type you need to buffer the signals or you'll fry the controller. With newer 3.3 volt ports you can wire it directly.

Hi Zee.. I have these pins on the Display:

VDD
SCK
SDIN
D/C
SCE
GND
VOUT
RES

1) I may I have 2,7 to 3,3V on VDD, right? I´m a little confused but how much current do I need from the source?
2) CD = D/C (Data / Command), correct?
3) Reset = Res
4) SDA = ?
5) SCL = SCK? Clock?

I need all the pins wired up, don´t I?

I used one of the remaining datalines (4-9) for the VDD.

So it would go:

LCD - LPT
VDD - 4
SCK - 14
SDIN - 1
DC - 2
SCE - 18-25
GND - 18-25
VOUT - Connect to GND through a small capacitor.
RES - 3
