Hi

I´m looking for aprox 240x128 lcd with orange or red on black colouring. I´m building a car mp3 player and that display comes to it.

Is there any alternatives than noritake´s vfd´s?

There used to be a shop in Netherlands that sold colored graphic LCD's. But it appears they're gone now; www.modwarehouse.nl
I'd go for a VFD as i doubt any LCD would have a good enough contrast and decent viewing angle to be used in a car.

If you get a standard White on Black LCD, you can very carefully pull the display off the PCB, and put a colour filter (celephane) behind the lcd, this would change the LCD to any colour you would like.

There's no reason why it shouldn't...

To tell you the truth... not 100% sure. I've never tried it, it's only a theory. It won't work on LCD's that have no backlight though, as they usually just have a reflective surface glued right on the LCD. But anything that has a clear LCD when you remove it from the frame, you should be able to do something similar with. LED backlighting would affect the colour though, as LED backlighting is usually green or yellow. If you really wanted a red and black one, you could also change the LED backlighting to red surfacemount LED's... I've done it before with Mobiles phones, but you have to be really good at soldering surface mount technology.

Ok... Quick update...

The green coloured LCD might actually have that green colouring in the glass itself... So, They are out, Unless.... You want to create an orange colour, by putting a yellow colour between the LCD and backlight...

Experiment I guess... I'll keep you updated as I play more.

OK.... So I experimented a little myself... a whole of about 2 hours, and 30 mins of that was getting the display I was going to pull apart wired and running with LCDInfo.


This is before any playing, with just it running.



For those of you that have no idea how to pull apart an LCD.



Ok... Now this has 2 differant coloured celephane, a yellow on the right, and a reddy pink on the left. as you can see, the yellow didn't seem to make much of a differance, however if you layered a few sheets together, you might get a nice orange. The reddy pink colour looks more like a brown.

Another alternative if you wanted to do a permenant change, would be to remove the LED back light, and spray it with a clear type glass paint. This would give it a much better uniformity as the celephane gives a rippled water effect under the LCD glass.

OK... Just to prove it can be done... here...


Here's the original... This is a Nan-ya 240x128 with CFL backlighting. The screen is inverted so that it's white on black.



And here's the same LCD after a VERY simple modification.


If you look closely you can even see where I didn't cut the celephane quite right, and the white is still showing through.

My camera is a crappy camera too, so it doesn't really give it justice.

That's some decent results. I know a German shop that sells QVGA displays in various colors based on this same principle.
In a car you'd really need a native colored display with a good viewable angle and contrast. A VFD would be ideal

I agree with you there, a VFD would be the best option by far, Well... other than an OLED... although, I would like to see a comparision. Got a nice demo VFD here at work, would love to get my hands on it.

Nice to see some life in this thread.

The startting problem is solved. I found quite a nice lcd from ebay, it's 480x240 planar El display. That's exactly the colour what I have looked for. In real the colour is almost orange but camera distorts the colour so in pictures it looks yellow.

please let us know how you interfaced it. We got the same Planar 480 too but on the SED1335 it's worthless
And yes that would be ideal for car use, if you can find the 320x240 HB version, that one is even brighter than the 480.
