I have experience dealing with LCDs with on-board controllers. Due to my quest for color displays, I'd like to proceed to using an external LCD controller with a PIC to drive an LCD display. http://www.epson-electronics.de/cgi-bin ... yOid=-8467 I'm not clear on LCD display terminology. VGA, SVGA, XVGA, active maxtrix, STN, etc. A display controller like a S1D13706 doesn't work with VGA display, does it? I'm hunting through surplus catalogs for interesting stuff. I see the S1D13706 mentions "STN interface". Is that the term for a standard interface I'm looking for? It mentions "passive STN" and "active matrix" display support. Do these all go through this STN interface? Which terms are things I can't use, and which ones are? |

Like, would this display: http://www.allelectronics.com/spec/LCD-103.pdf be driveable with the Epson S1D13700 from the page mentioned in the previous post? What's the deal with "Data for Upper Screen" and "Data for Lower Screen"? Do they divide the screen in half or what? |

Epson site is not currently working so I don't have access to the S1D13706 datasheet to see what it really supports. "STN interface" itself doesn't tell very clearly what the controller supports. The best way to check the compatibility of a controller and display is to have datasheets for both and then see if the controller supports the interface offered by the lcd. S1D13700 datasheet on the other hand says that the maximum size supported is 640x240 so that 640x400 display from your link won't work. Also the S1D13700 only has 4-bit interface and the panel has dual 4-bit bit interface which means it's a dual scan lcd and the panel is divided in two parts. This means that the controller updates the two halfs of the screen at the same time. VGA means 640x480 resolution, SVGA 800x600 and XGA 1024x768 Active matrix = TFT display STN = passive matrix display |
