Hi All -

I have an old LM211 lcd panel here, 64x480. It's just the bare panel, no controller or anything at all on it. I got from (I think) All Electronics a couple of years ago, or perhaps one of the other vendors like MECI, Alltronics, etc.

After some digging on the net, I've seen this one used with an HD61830 controller chip. See http://almorton.free.fr/lcd/. 73.com also has a vendor with a batch of them, with that controller already on board, or at least that's how I read it. http://www.73.com/a/0069.shtml.

Trouble is, I can't find a supplier for this controller. Nor the LC7981 which seems to be somewhat compatible.

Can anyone suggest another controller to use with this panel, one that is readily available and fairly easy to interface ? It will eventually be built up with an AVR microcontroller. Heck, I'll bet that there's even a project out there as a generic graphics lcd controller board ...

A SED1335 controller board would do the trick to. In the USA easily available for about 40~50$ from MPI.

I had a quick look at the lcd datasheet and it shows that the lcd only has 2 data lines. Checking the HD61830/LC7981 datasheet also shows that they use 2 datalines.
SED1335 on the other hand uses 4 datalines to transfer the data to the driver IC's so there seems to be a compatibility problem.

I don't remember seeing other controller IC's beside HD61830/LC7981 that would use 2 datalines.

Hrm. Blasted LM211 datasheet is a little thin ... I wonder if it's possible to retrofit the sed133x to this LM211 display. I think the MPI S1335 board can handle displays that are quite a bit larger than the LM211, hence the availability of the 4 data lines.

I found what looks like a nice standalone controller board ...

Just waking this old thread up again. I never did get that LM211 lcd going, and now I have a project that it would be perfect for ...

So, can anyone refer me to a nice (hopefully cheap) controller board for the LM211 ?

I think I've seen someone else post on this display before, but can't remember where. Anyway, I've been working on a LC7981 controller board for a display I have which originaly required the HD61830 as well. I don't know if I have the datasheet for the LM211 or not, but if you could provide a pinout and voltage requirements, I might be able to get one made up for you when I get mine made. Problem is, it's not going to be something that would happen in the next week or 2....probably closer to 4-5 weeks.

**EDIT** Never mind, found the LM211 data sheet. One thing I didn't see mentioned is a backlight
Don't know if that's a big concern for you or not, but you may want to try and find one with a backlight if possible.

One~Zero - that would be excellent ! Please do keep me posted on how your board is going, price you would need etc.

My old display has no backlight, but that's OK. I may be able to cobble up an EL panel, but it's not a big deal. Just getting access to the actual display is more important.

Get a LED backlight if possible. No extra electronics involved (i.e. inverter) and much better brightness in my own opinion.

Indeed EL sucks but it's the easiest way of backlighting. However if your LCD is reflective you'll need to do a lot more work to get any backlight working.

Heh, backlighting is the least of my worries. Just being able to talk to the thing ranks up there a little more I'm definitely highly interested to see what One~Zero comes up with ...

Thanks for the offer. Right now I'm just trying to get all the parts together and get some files sent out to get some prototype boards made up (I'm currently using Eagle CAD...great little program).

Jus waking things up a little. How did your board design go ? Anything I can help with ?
