first of all what dimension is the EL surface you want to use ? for small surfaces you can find a lot of integrated EL drivers and it saves you A LOT of trouble. If you can't find anything close to your needs then maybe buy a dc booster controller chip and make your own transistor square wave generator ...OR make you own dc booster (which is not terribly complicated). some time ago i managed to produce a dc booster with nearly 70% conversion ratio and light up (very brightly) a 2000 sq cm piece of EL sheet from a 12V car batt. so... you choose ![]() anyway, if you have the transformer in your schematic don't bother with the damn dc booster. just get around 60-90V DC and generate your own square wave AC with some transistors. maybe it uses more power than a sine wave osc but hell, its waaay easier. |

the LCD is ~ 2500 sq cm in size that I want to light up. |

Opps, I mean ~36sq cm, 6x6 cm |

then your thing is an integrated EL driver...look for something like Sipex SP4422, or IMP560, or Supertex HV8XX... just read the pdfs and choose one. good luck ! |

I actually did some poking around on Digikey and found one that may work, NDL-203 from www.jkllamps.com. So I'll find out shortly if it works once it arrives. Thanks again. |

Post subject: | strange chip |
the datasheet is a little strange...usually the EL drivers require a few external components. this one just has IN,OUT and GND. seems big enough to have everything inside ![]() |

Yes those are mini-inverters. I've used one to succesfully drive an EL sheet for a 128x128 LCD (which is dead now ![]() |

Got the inverter in and it works great!, pulls only 30-40mA at 5v which is good news for my app, I am trying to conserve as much battery power as possible. Thanks again for the input. |
