I am searching for al ultra low power LCD that will be powered from only one little coin cell battery and that should last for a year or more.
It's size should be below 35 x 38 mm (outer borders) and its thickness below 3mm.

The display should preferably be cog, since those do not use much current and are compact in size. (please let me know if I am wrong here, but that's what I have learned so far)

I have seen that you often use old nokia phone displays that are in that size. But these displays use (as far as I have seen) 0.2 mA and more current. (I hope i didn't miss anything )

Do you have any suggestions? Any experiences with some very low power displays? Can you help me on this one?

Besides: It should be available on the market also in low quantities. I dont want to search for old cellphones or something like it. And it should come with the controller as a module. (simple interface to the microcontroller would be a benefit) B/W ist prefered but colour is ok too.

0.2 mA is typically what a COG display of this size uses. If you want really
low consumption, you should not use a COG, but a plain LCD, driven
directly by your low power device (e.g. MSP430, but there are other
examples).

If I understand you right, the display will turn all white, when in standby? It will not show an image?

I think you are totally right when you state that the controller is the component that uses the high current. So I searched a bit for a low power LCD controller and found a display module that seems to be quite a bit better than the rest.

(Sorry, the datasheet is in german...)
They call it "EA W128W-6X8HEW" and it uses 70 micro Amperes in normal condition and 10 micro Amperes in standby mode.
(Dies anyone know the real brand of this display? I don't think they produce it by themselves...) So that is a factor 4 or 5 less current than comparable modules. It uses only one external component and generates the required voltages on its own. Interfaceing seems to be simple, since the module has its own ram to store the display data and can be interfaced serial or parallel.

It uses the KS 0713 low power controller.
Does anyone know this display or controller?
Do you know any comparable controllers and modules that are consuming even less current?

I have also found a more detailed Datasheet for the Varitronix display!
However, the BCD technology requires a special driving scheme different to that of standard TN/STN display. Quite inconvenient if you ask me. And the description does not seem to be clear enough.
I don't remember the page where i got that datasheet from.
