I have a backlight inverter that came with the LCD (from a laptop) and I can't figure out the connections, it has 4 input wires and 2 output (to the tube). The inputs are Positive, Negative, and then 2 other ones. If I tap one of the other ones with a pencil while the + and - are hooked up, it blinks the tube and then goes out again. What are these extra connections for? Also what voltage should be used for positive?

Those kind of inverters are software controlled, so i think one's an enable input and perhaps the other one is for a dimming signal.
Surely this info an be found on the net.

Found thisdatsheet of a TDK inveter in another post, perhaps you can look at the application notes and find some useful info.

Coorz is right... at least one of those other pins is the enable pin, and it would be perfectly safe for you to pull it either high or low, within the range of the Input powersupply that is. The other maybe a dimming control, and may require a voltage to control the brightness, this one would most likely be held high for maximum brightness.

Most of these just need +12V and GND to work...try poking around a little with some multimeter probes hooked up to a 6v battery to see if you can get it to light up. Then you can use those points to hook it up to +12V and GND.
